Skagit Horticulture Spring Internship

Internship Dates: January 10th – July 8th, 2022

Skagit Horticulture is a top 100 wholesale grower of perennials and annuals based in Mount Vernon, Washington. We grow our products at three sites comprising 325 acres, striving to be efficient producers of high-quality products for our customers around the country.

The Skagit Horticulture Internship is a paid internship that runs from mid-January to mid-July each year. We provide an opportunity to current students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in greenhouse production at a large-scale operation. This is a fully immersive experience that allows participants to apply their education, manage a crop from start to finish, and gain valuable skills in ornamental crop production. We are happy to host academic advisors for an on-site visit!

Objectives:
• Take ownership of a growing area to participate in a crop’s production from start to finish
• Become proficient in use of irrigation, chemical application, and other relevant equipment
• Understand the inputs and process to achieve a saleable product
• Shadow other departments to see the bigger picture of our company

Expectations/Assignments:
• Manage moisture levels based on crop and demonstrate good judgement in watering
• Identify pest and nutritional issues and offer solutions to resolve the issue(s)
• Perform chemical applications to assigned crops including fungicides, insecticides, and PGRs
• Assist with scouting and application of beneficial biologicals
• Collect and process soil samples to monitor nutrition levels
• Participate in crop and safety meetings

Requirements:
• Current university student or graduated within the last year
• Able to work in changing environmental conditions including but not limited to: heated greenhouses, open fields, sun/rain/wind
• Able to stand for long periods of time, able to lift 30-40lbs
• Must secure own housing for duration of internship
